Bonnie is a volunteer transportation driver with VON Oxford. Since being retired, Bonnie has found that volunteering as a transportation driver gives her day focus. She says, “My clients rely on me and the sense of responsibility that I feel to them makes me feel valued.” Bonnie’s main goal with this position is to get her clients to their destination safely, on time and in a pleasant mood.
How has COVID-19 impacted Bonnie’s work? “The COVID concerns have cut down on my number of trips, as many non-essential appointments have been deferred,” she says. As Bonnie is in close contact with clients, she is aware of both the nuisances and necessity of using PPE. Thankfully all clients are willing to comply and Bonnie continues to remain safe due to these protocols. “I read the frequent updates from VON about procedures and implement the ones that pertain to transportation,” Bonnie says.
When asked what the best part is, Bonnie says, “I think the best part is when clients give me a heartfelt thank you for delivering them safely back to their front door. That’s enough for me. Also, it’s rewarding when I’m able to ease a client’s stress level by diverting conversation while driving.” Thank you, Bonnie, for being our VON Hero in Oxford County.
